PLANINA
Wildflower meadow at Planina

Experiences

What to do.
And what to notice.

On the farm

Six things worth doing.

None of these are formal activities with a start time. They happen when they happen, because the farm happens when it happens.

🐝
Morning with the beekeeper
All year

Your host has kept thirty hives for years. On your first morning he will walk you to the apiary — suited or unsuited, your choice — lift a frame, find the queen if you are lucky, and cut you a piece of comb honey to eat on the spot. This is not a demonstration. It is his morning routine, and you are joining it.

🌲
Farm walk
All year

An hour's walk through all five zones of the farm — orchard, meadow, vegetable garden, forest edge, hives. He will tell you about the land: what grows where and why, which trees are old, where the porcini push up in autumn, where the nightingales sing at dusk. Not a tour. A conversation.

🍄
Foraging in the forest
Aug–Oct

Porcini, chanterelle, parasol mushroom — the beech-oak forest above the farm is reliably productive from August through October. Your host knows where to look. He will also show you what not to pick. Return to the fire pit, slice and grill over the coals.

🍑
Plum harvest and rakija
Sep–Oct

The šljiva harvest happens in September. If you are here, you will be part of it — shaking the branches, filling the crates. In October the distillation starts: the plums go into the kazán and come out as rakija. Autumn is the best time on the farm.

🌸
Wildflower meadow walks
Apr–Jul

The hay meadow is cut twice — once in July and once in September. Between cuts it is full of wildflowers: scabious, knapweed, ox-eye daisy, betony, wild orchids in damp corners. Walk it slowly, in the morning, when the insects are working.

🔭
Night sky
Any evening

Planina village has no street lighting. On a clear night the sky is extraordinary. In summer, the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye. Bring a torch for the path back to the tent.

Wild porcini from the forest

“He goes out at first light. He always comes back with something.”

Beyond the farm

What's nearby.

20 min
Krupanj town

The municipal centre — a café, a market, a small museum of local natural history. Nothing remarkable, but pleasant. The market on Saturday mornings has fresh produce from local farms.

35 min
Tronoša Monastery

A medieval Serbian Orthodox monastery set in the valley below the Cer mountain. Founded in the fourteenth century, with a working monastic community and remarkable frescoes.

45 min
Drina River canyon

The Drina gorge on the border with Bosnia — sheer limestone cliffs, clear green water, and some of the most dramatic river scenery in the Balkans. Accessible by road; kayaking possible with local operators.

50 min
Tara National Park

One of Serbia's most important protected areas — beech forests, limestone karst, the Drina viewpoint at Banjska Stena. Full day required. Worth it.

1 hr
Loznica

The nearest larger town, with a hospital, supermarket, and a bus connection to Belgrade. Useful to know about; not a reason to come.

Getting around

A car is essential. There is no public transport between Planina village and Krupanj. The farm roads are driveable in a normal car in dry weather; in wet weather a higher-clearance vehicle is useful. We can arrange a local taxi from Krupanj for guests arriving by bus from Belgrade (3–4 hours, several daily departures from Lasta bus station).
